Artist
I first entered the art world as a photographer. I had graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in Journalism, but in my senior year I had a photography course which made me realize that I was probably a better visual artist than writer. After a brief stint as associate editor/photographer at Georgia Life magazine, an artist friend convinced me to start exhibiting photographs as art. In the early 1980’s I began incorporating oil tints onto my black and white photos – which was somewhat unusual for the times. (Some of these are shown on the Photographs page of this site.) “Abe’s Bail Bonds”, for example, was featured in the book, Time-Life Photo Year 1982, and I had a sell-out show that same year at a gallery in New York City. Despite that apparent success, I was not comfortable constantly using the technical aspects of photography, and by 1990 the oil paint went from photos to brushes and canvases. I never had any art or painting lessons – I just started doing it.
